Artist Statement
I’ve been making furniture in wood most of my life, starting with a spice rack cabinet for the wall of my mom’s kitchen, at around age 13 or 14. All of the pieces I have built over the decades, no two have been alike, except for a set or two of chairs. Over the span of my professional career as a structural engineer, I collaborated with architects, designers, and artists on building projects, and have learned a design sensitivity from them.
Each piece of furniture that I make I design from scratch. My process is very traditional in that I design with hand sketches, draw my own fabrication drawings by hand on a big drafting table, during which the little design embelleshments come into the piece, and then build the piece in my shop. It’s hard to put my work into a category; rather I’ve been inspired by the work of Maloof, Hack, Frid, Rogowski, Krenov, Stickley, Nakashima, Klausz, and many other largely unknown makers and friends. Every piece I make teaches me something new about the craft I love – the different behaviours and smells of different species of wood, how to use a new tool, or try a new joinery configuration.
Now that I have more time to devote to making furniture in my home shop just outside of Santa Fe, I take commissioned work. I look forward to working directly with clients, architects, and designers who would like me to create a custom piece of furniture. Many times, I design and build a piece for a specific spot in a home or office.
